Anyone ever see the TV show Undercover Boss?
MELEK - (MEHL-EKTH)
Melek means king, a royal king, ruler over government, And most importantly the king embodied political, social, religious, and military authority. Melek is the embodiment of ruling.
Melek means king, a royal king, ruler over government, And most importantly the king embodied political, social, religious, and military authority. Melek is the embodiment of ruling.
MELEK is actually more correctly pronounced as , but we’re going to stick with Melek because its easier! Melek means king, a royal king, ruler over government, And most importantly the king embodied political, social, religious, and military authority. Melek is the embodiment of ruling.
Melek is used over 2,500 times in the Old Testament! Yeah, it’s a lot. and It first shows up in Where we see the list of kings during Abram’s life. Literally mentioned hundreds of times in the books of Genesis, Deuteronomy, Exodus, Numbers, 1 and 2 kings, 1 and 2 Samuel. It’s everywhere! The word is so prevalent in scripture and it is so widely used. So what is the significance of this word in relation to identifying God as King? Why should we find it important when we think about it as a name of God?
the king embodied political, social, religious, and military authority
Melek is used over 2,500 times in the Old Testament!
First seen in and onward…
This is such a common word, why should it be significant to Call God our king? Why does it matter?
Well, God is the perfect king. No doubt, he rules rightly and justly. And in our main passage for today we see that God is the source of just and righteous kingship and ruling. Would someone please read psalm 72:1-3?
God is the perfect
When we call God king, we know he rules rightly and justly. And in our main passage for today we see that God is the source of just and righteous kingship and ruling.
Would someone please read psalm 72:1-3?
Alright so hear we have it, the Psalm is described as attested to Solomon, whether he wrote it or it is about him doesn’t matter, the point is that the king is supposed to be like God in his kingship. And solomon was described as being extremely wise - so much so that other queens and kings in the area recognized his wise kingship and reliance on God. Could someone go to 1 kings 10:6-9 and read it?
Describe context of the psalm… Coronation for installing kings, … of/for Solomon… most importantly, right ruling comes from God, God is source of Right ruling.
And Solomon was described as being extremely wise - so much so that other queens and kings in the area recognized his wise kingship and reliance on God. Could someone go to 1 kings 10:6-9 and read it?
Describe how Good his kingship was… So she recognizes God is the source of right ruling. She even praised Solomons God for his wise ruling and authority! she recognized the reality of psalm 72, that the king is supposed to bring prosperity to all people in his kingdom, especially to the poor and afflicted. So we lightly see how Solomon set a prime example.
Describe how Good his kingship was… especially to the poor and afflicted… Cod of Hammurabi/babylonian texts… Other religions at the time wrote extremely similiar things to psalm 72… Idealized this virute of taking care of the afflicted…
So Earthly ruling should be based upon God’s heavenly ruling. and the way we rule Earthly will reflect the way God rules heavenly. The way we live should be clearly reflect heaven. he is the source of what it means to embody kingship. To be a successful Melek, means to be reliant on the Lord.
So Earthly ruling should be based upon God’s heavenly ruling. he is the source of what it means to embody kingship. To be a successful Melek, means to be reliant on the Lord.
In our world today, there are 195 countries… what if they relied on the lord…? Fun to imagine, Not all leaders are perfect, NOT A NEW PROBLEM!
In our world today, there are 195 countries, which means there are 195 rulers, presidents, dictators, whatever. What would our world look like if all they countries and nations ruled in accordance to relying on the Lord. What if all the Meleks recognized God as the source of righteous and just kingship?
books of kings is full of wayward leaders.... Let’s go to . Starting at verse 6, we see the people asking Samuel to give them a king. So samuel consults God to figure out what to do. And this is what we read… 1 sam 8:6-9...
This is a fun question question to imagine, to wonder how wonderful our world would be if our leaders relied on the Lord. But we can’t only apply this to our leaders, believe it or not, this word becomes much more personal and intimate as we will see here in just a little bit. The reality is is that our world and world leaders do not live like God is the creator of righteous and just kingship. This isn’t a new problem!
Samuel then goes on to warn them of the mistake they made. By Rejecting God as their Melek, they are going to suffer the consequences of their decision. it goes on in Verse 18-20…
1 and 2 samuel, and 1 and 2 kings is full of testimony after testimony of kings going wayward. Let’s go to 1 kings 8. Starting at verse 6, we see the people asking Samuel to give them a king. So samuel consults God to figure out what to do. And this is what we read… 1 sam 8:6-9...
WOW… they would suffer… They forgot that God is the source of righteous and just ruling, God is the one who established their nation, he’s the one who was their first king. And they’ve rejected him. Should we be surprised when non christian leaders act like non christian leaders? no! They don’t operate under gods authority!
Samuel then goes on to warn them of the mistake they made. By Rejecting God as their Melek, they are going to suffer the consequences of their decision. it goes on in Verse 18-20…

Section 2

WOW. That’s a dangerous spot to be in Israel. And if you’ve read the rest of 1 and 2 samuel, and the books of kings and chronicles, youll see just how far Israel and Judah went from not listening to God as their King. They really suffered what they had done. The Forgot that the source of kingship was God. and their meleks forget that.
This name Melek is applied to Jesus in the new Testament, when I was thinking abou Jesus as the true king, it reminded me of a Story about Jeff Becker rejecting Jesus kingship/peace…
They think the same thing that the jews thought in Jesus’ time… victorious and powerful messiah to over throw rome , coming in judgement and wrath, to establish his kingdom of peace… Revelation attests to it…
and many believe in 2 messiahs… Some claim john the baptist as being part of that sect…
So they believed the Messiah would establish his rule through conquering, mighty power…
But how did the messiah come? Jesus came as a lowly servant… least of these.. healing… serving… dieing on a cross.... through suffering.... Read
This is the king that Jews don’t connect with…
But Jesus came to serve and not be served , and to seek and save the lost
Let’s turn to , to see just how Jesus saw himself and his kingship…
Fulfilled prophecy from … and guess what, This word king here is “Melek”/equivalent to the greek “βασιλεύς” … affirming his kingdom of serving. Jesus is identifying that he is the king…
Establish his reign on earth through death on the cross… Through serving and suffering that his kingdom reigns...
So Jesus, fully see’s himself, and is definitelyy telling us he is the true MELEK/Basileus… Fullfilling davids throne… Everything that prophecied to a eternal king, is fulfilled in Jesus…
Let’s take a look back at psalm 72. When we read , it is a messianic psalm… Let’s read from verse 5. We can’t cut this psalm at verse 3. It tells a bigger story of a king and his kingdom...
This Psalm is also Messianic… expectations…
You see, when this kingdom comes… it will be righteous and just kingdom that aids all people, that is the defining characteristic, it will aid everyone especially the poor, afflicted, and oppressed…

Section 3

And that is exactly what Jesus did when he came, announcing the arrival of his kingdom…
Throughout the gospels, Jesus constantly proved the pharisees wrong… testing… questioning…
The sermon on the mount is Jesus defining what he has come to do, Jesus went forth and did the things he decreed…
Not everyone believed him....
John the baptist, … (Read and walk through it) verses 1-15… then 25-30.
Who is Jesus freeing?… why do they need freeing?
Turn to -the end… (skim through it…)
The pharisees were not doing what the kingdom of God required, taking care of the people… They did not follow God’s example of being a righteous and just MELEKs who cared for the afflicted and poor. Their earthly living did not reflect God’s heavenly kingdom...
They are described as not lifting a finger to free them… They were not being righteous and just Melek’s or leaders…

Section four closing

So in Jesus’ life he decreed this new kingdom, and actually upheld the decree by serving. He established his reign through serving others. He did what Israel was supposed to do!
Part of establishing a kingdom and reign, means you need to establish a new way of doing things that represent your kingdom.
The Gospel- Matthew describes as the Gospel of the Kingdom. (matthew)
the Good news of Jesus! is the nwe way of doing things!
And Jesus did that through his healings, teachings, and servings we saw in matthew 11.
And that gospel of the kingdom will one day be fulfilled victoriously and righteously as Jesus comes on that white horse defeating evil forever. But Jesus’ kingdom is present on earth when he came to earth, and through the death on the cross he established his kingdom in our hearts. because of his spirit! So what does that mean for us? Here’s a question, how should we operate as citizens of his kingdom? (we should operate in the same way that the king does!)
That’s the example he set! Coming as servants, who rule righteously and justly, and help the afflicted porr, and oppressed… those are the marks of his Kingdom and is how we are supposed to live.
So when we think about Jesus’ and God being “Melek”, we have to realize that since God operates in the ways of psalm 72, he requires us his citizens of his kingdom to operate in the same way. That’s our responsibility...
STORY ABOUT TD JAKES PRISON MINISTRY
One thing that is important to mention, is that being a MELEK or king means that if you suffer, then your citiznes suffer, if youre successful in relying on the lord, your citizens will prosper as well. Jesus has provided the way to prosper in his kingdom through serving others. THATS THE WAY OF HIS KINGDOM .
